Do Workers Bargain Over Wages? A Test Using Dual Jobholders
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines the behavior of dual jobholders to test a simple model wage bargaining versus posting in which workers facing hours constraints their primary job take second, flexible-hours for additional income. When secondary offers sufficiently high wage, worker either bargains with employer increase or separates. The provides number predictions that we using matched employer-employee administrative data from Washington State. estimates match model’s quite well. First, separation probabilities are sensitive wages job, but not. Second, and separations due income effects. Third, takes place mainly among highest quartile; these workers, increases lead job. In contrast, lowest quartile, higher rates no significant consistent posting. These patterns suggest high-wage receive larger share surplus generated by employment relationship.

Bargain over Joint Plans
This paper studies the problem of multi-agent planning in the environment where agents may need to cooperate in order to achieve their individual goals but they do so only if the cooperation is beneficial to each of them. We assume that each agent has a reward function and a cost function that determines the agent’s utility over all possible plans. The agents negotiate to form a joint plan thro...

Standard new Keynesian models assume the functional distribution of income is irrelevant. This stands in contrast to much of the public debate which presumes that a shift in the distribution of income towards workers will boost aggregate demand and employment. Under this latter view, falling wages during a recession can worsen unemployment. In contrast, neoclassical economics often views unempl...
متن کاملA Note on Dual Internal Labor Markets and Wages of Temporary Workers
I use linked employer-employee data from the German Federal Statistical Office to estimate within-firm wage differentials between temporary workers with fixed-term contracts and workers with permanent contracts in the context of dual internal labor markets. Wage-tenure profiles of permanent workers are estimated separately for each firm to obtain a proxy for the prevalence of internal labor mar...

Do Workers Work More When Wages Are High? Evidence from a Randomized Field Experiment Most previous studies on intertemporal labor supply found very small or insignificant substitution effects. It is not clear, however, whether these results are due to institutional constraints on workers’ labor supply choices or whether the behavioral assumptions of the standard life cycle model with time sepa...
متن کاملDo Workers Work More if Wages Are High? Evidence from a Randomized Field Experiment
Most previous studies on intertemporal labor supply found very small or insignificant substitution effects. It is possible that these results are due to constraints on workers’ labor supply choices. We conducted a field experiment in a setting in which workers were free to choose hours worked and effort per hour. We document a large positive elasticity of overall labor supply and an even larger...
